WCA: New Beginnings

The slow trod of 6.82 continues on, gracing us all with new approaches to old methods. With an updated map and new additions to Captain’s Mode, we are beginning to see the landscape develop in fresh ways and games play out in unusual ways. Fitting that it’s at World Cyber Arena, a newly minted organization aiming to serve multiple games in a single venue as the WCG of days past.

In the first two days there were several attempts at Legion Commander. Cloud 9 went back to Drow Visage, and Vici Gaming gave it a shot again too. There were even a few Terrorblades.

Old Tricks

While the TI3 Aegis winners haven’t looked up to their old form lately, they started the first two days of play with a perfect 4-0 record. Reaching deep inside themselves, they pulled once again from the bag of tricks that made them unstoppable through much of 2013 and unleashed their inner rat and split pushed games to victory. When presented with a Naga Siren to pick first they snatched it without question, and when Naga wasn’t available they went to a Loda powered Spectre both times (once with a Nature’s Prophet once without).

While it’s not telling of any long term trends, they looked a lot stronger so far than they have in recent memory. They played the calm, patient, and extremely cautious Dota that won them a collection of events prior to 2014 and went through each game taking every small advantage they could by controlling the waves well and knowing precisely when to strike the high ground. Tomorrow’s challenge against Newbee will be their next test, and though the TI4 champions didn’t look particularly daunting in i-League you can never count them out.

The Terror

Of the recent addition to Captain’s Mode, Terrorblade is by far the most popular. Banned in nearly every game, he has been let through only three times, to a 2-1 victory. While the winrate doesn’t look impressive, the context in which he won was something of note. In both games the Terrorblade of EternalEnvy found himself underfarmed on a team that was down a double-digit kill score against LGD. Despite having the map restricted from him and the enemy exploring the C9 jungle, they he went on to find enough gold to begin the march back and slowly push back to take victory from LGD.

In both games he went straight for an Eye of Skadi, which you may remember him attempting in a disasterous Ember Spirit game in last spring’s DreamLeague finals, into Manta and then Black King Bar. The illusions went out to push out lanes and Envy farmed the jungle, did damage to towers, or helped fight. One of the games ended after Envy was able to put himself in a position to send constant illusions at the enemy throne and LGD had no ways to stop the constant chip damage.

Of course, Luo then tried something similar when iG was down against VG but his Radiance build failed to carry the day and they were knocked to the lower half (where Team Malaysia promptly sent them home).

The Eternal Game

In their first game, Na`Vi were able to outmaneuver LGD in the laning stage to give themselves an advantage heading into the mid and later stages, but then found themselves in the unfortunate position of slowly giving it all away before the 30 minute mark. While Funn1k tried his hand at the split push that seems to be working for Alliance, it wasn’t enough and they found themselves a game away from elimination uncharacteristically fast.

They went into game 2 and decided to try a jungle Funn1k Legion Commander, only to find things were not quite meant to be—the game was paused, and paused, and paused again due to computer issues. Lag and server hiccups forced the game to be paused and reloaded several times, losing a BTS caster in the process and driving KotLguy to near hysteria. Wca dota 2 reddit forums Four hours passed, the Invictus Gaming vs Team Malaysia series came and went, and Game 2 had yet to complete. The game then had to be taken offline and played in local mode, which fortunately survived in a good enough state to call the result, and Na`Vi emerged victorious and brought the series to a game 3.

Apparently this is where there was some disagreement, as Na`Vi wanted to play the final match tomorrow after resting and LGD wanted it done tonight. A coin was flipped and the game was said to be played offstream, the reports of which we only have from a v1lat live report session. In the end it seemed the Rapier Medusa of Na`Vi was not strong enough to take over the LGD Spectre and the Ukrainian team was sent home.

Six hours for a best-of-3, all said and done.
