Yu-gi-oh – cough – I mean the new Hero Selection HUD (with Poll)

Note: I’ve seen a few post on this but none of them really said much other than they didn’t like it so I thought I’d attempt to make a more in-depth post.

1. If you already know what hero you want to play you can select them incredibly fast by just typing in their name into the filter bar. Or even short cut names like “og” for orge magi
2. The filtration system is great for people who want to play a particular type of hero. By stats, or hero type, etc.
3. I like how you can choose your most successful or least successful hero’s, hero’s you have items for, etc.
4. Smooth hud. Valve is always good at that.

1. The Hud poorly displays what hero’s have already been selected. (screen in the right hand corner for enemy team, left for your team)

2. You can’t default the HUD on grid. You automatically start out playing Yu-gi-oh – cough – i mean. hero selection? I know there’s a short cut to grid but still thats extra work considering people might have already picked the hero you wanted

3. This adds to the point above. Some people might say “well if you knew what hero you wanted why not just type it into the filter” Well, I, like many other Dota 1 players enjoy the grid style hero selection where we may not necessarily even know what hero we want to decide on until the last second.

4. Again to add to #3. I think valve should add in 10-30seconds of delay before choosing a hero BUT also allow us to observe hero selections instead of just jumping right into it (Like in Dota 1). I think this would be very helpful for planning out hero’s and coordinating. Not just in In-house games but in Public games too.

5. Many people, along with missing what hero’s have already been chosen, fail to see the random button. The old button was better imo– was POW right in your face. New button is off to the side but blends in too much. I’ve been in so many games where people have had to pause because they couldn’t find the random button.

6. The Grid option does not phase out hero’s that have been selected. (Again a lot of people don’t look at the bottom right corner to see what hero’s have been chosen. Having a bigger visual display — like a hero phase out or disappearance of hero photos would be nice. Add a big red X or something over the hero or again phase them out. — note: I know there is currently a hero phase out but i wish it was more blatant

7. yu-gi-oh option takes to long to sift through. (in my opinion) Allow people to toggle on or off having the grid option as default when they enter a game instead of having yu-gi-oh card selection screen as default. Again I know this can be changed fast but still its quite an annoyance to even have to start out like that.

Final Thoughts: Look I am in no way whining. I Think Valve is doing an amazing job with Dota 2. I’ve been playing Dota for over 7 years now on and off (crazy). I picked up Dota 2 as soon as i got my beta key some months ago. Everything valve has done so far has really been amazing and I love that they are completely open to player feedback unlike many other companies – cough – blizzard – cough-. Valve please keep up the good work!

This post is in order to voice my opinion yes, but also in order to hopefully improve the game as much as possible. I am no expert and im sure there are people who LOVE the new HUD. I also know that there are a lot of people who don’t. I have been very nit picky in this post, in pointing out things that could be done better simply because I want the game to be the beset it can possibly be.

I apologize for any mistakes or terrible grammar. Its not that I don’t know English or can’t write. I just don’t really make forum post like this unless its something I think should be voiced. As such I usually take a few rounds of edits to smooth things out.

PLEASE COMMENT. VOICE YOUR THOUGHTS. HAVE YOUR OWN IDEAS? AGREE WITH ME? DISAGREE?

p. s. Vote in the poll about the new hero selection hud!

no flaming please happy conversations!

edit: 3rd poll options should say “I don’t care!”

Thunder Dragon

Sakai (さかい) went 5-1-2 and finished 1st in “109th Aichi CS Team Battle in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti!” which had 31 teams (93 participants).

His build is well-adjusted for the Thunder Dragon mirror match, having 3 Infinite Impermanence and 2 Crackdown to answer Thunder Dragon Colossus.

Scapegoat also provides access to a variety of Link Monsters toolbox for a huge tempo swing turn.

Altergeist

GenGen went 6-1 and finished 4th in “Lancelord Cup @ 3v3 Team Battle” which had 38 teams (114 participants).

Anticipating more backrow heavy decks, he ran 1 Harpie’s Feather Duster and 2 Heavy Storm Duster in the Main Deck.

Expecting that his opponents will be running more backrow destruction as well, he had Waking the Dragon prepared in the Side Deck.

Orcust

Alala (あらら) went 8-0 and finished 1st in “109th Aichi CS Team Battle in NextPro Osu Shop with Hatti!” which had 31 teams (93 participants).

A top contender in the TCG, Danger Orcust was able to replicate its success in the OCG.

There is an interesting trick with Nibiru, the Primal Being and Orcust graveyard effects.

While Orcustrated Babel is on the field, during the opponent’s turn after the opponent has summoned 5 or more monsters, the player can activate Nibiru, the Primal Being from hand, and then chain with their own Orcust graveyard effect.

Chain 1: Nibiru, the Primal Being ① effect
Chain 2: Orcust Knightmare ② effect

Resolving the Chain, Orcust Knightmare will send 1 DARK Machine monster from deck to graveyard and restrict the player to Special Summoning only DARK monsters for this turn. Then Nibiru, the Primal Being would tribute all face-up monsters on the field, but being a LIGHT monster, it would not be Special Summoned and the effect stops right there.

Since Nibiru, the Primal Being remains in hand, this is essentially a reusable board wipe for the Orcust player.

Salamangreat

Lakers (れいかーず) went 5-2 and finished 4th in “Lancelord Cup @ 3v3 Team Battle” which had 38 teams (114 participants).

He ran 3 Knightmare Corruptor Iblee in the Side Deck as a tech against Nibiru, the Primal Being.

Knightmare Corruptor Iblee is a Cyberse monster and can be used to Link Summon Salamangreat Balelynx, and in doing so would trigger the ③ effect to Special Summon it to the opponent’s field.

Iblee’s effect would prevent the opponent from perform any Special Summon except Link Monsters, and that would deny Nibiru, the Primal Being. At the same time, putting a monster on the opponent’s field also stops Infinite Impermanence from being activated from hand.

The 3 Cynet Mining greatly increases the chances of opening with Knightmare Corruptor Iblee.

Conclusion

The most impactful card of the early OCG 2019.10 format is definitely Nibiru, the Primal Being.

Upon the release of Extra Pack 19 and then followed by the news of OCG 2019.10 Limit Regulation, the initial knee-jerk reaction of most players is to switch to a beatdown deck that do not rely on multiple Special Summons.

True Draco made multiple top finishes in the first week, but it was Thunder Dragon that took over in the second week.

Thunder Dragon Colossus could easily shutdown Pot of Duality, Dragonic Diagram, Waterfall of Dragon Souls and True Draco had difficulty going against Thunder Dragon’s high ATK and destruction substitution effect.

The rise of Thunder Dragon brought along its nemesis – Altergeist. And now with 2 One for One for quick access to Altergeist Meluseek to take out Thunder Dragon Colossus.

Orcust is also another deck that has a good match-up against Thunder Dragon. Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star is an easy answer to Thunder Dragon Colossus.

Other combo decks like SPYRAL and Danger are also looking to break the metagame by using Outer Entity Azathot to block Nibiru, the Primal Being.

YOT Singapore 2019 will be taking place in the coming week, follow the coverage on Yu-Gi-Oh! Events or Beyond the Duel.
