You’re all wrong: autoexec. cfg does NOT load automatically.
Been reading thread after thread saying that if you add +exec autoexec. cfg to the steam launch settings for dota2, then it will automatically load your autoexec. cfg file. Others have suggested adding “exec” “autoexec. cfg” to the game_convars. vcfg file.
I did both those things, and no, I still have to open the console in-game and type “exec autoexec. cfg”.
FURTHERMORE, I have to do this every single game. I know my file is in the correct folder, because it loads it just fine when I type the console command to load it. Byt the game is un-loading it each time I leave a game, and it does not remember to load it again when a new game starts. In other words, if I leave a game (going to the main menu), without shutting down dota2, and then start a new game, my autoexec. cfg file no longer works and I must open the console and type exec autoexec. cfg to load it again for that game.
Please don’t tell me to put my autoexec. cfg file into the correct folder. It’s in the correct folder. It loads if I type the command into the console. The game finds it just fine. It just doesn’t load it automatically. If anyone in the year 2016+ actually has a currently working solution to get it to load an autoexec. cfg file automatically at the launch of a new game, meaning you can make it past the hero selection screen and your autoexec. cfg file is still working in-game, and you want to post a video to prove it (because no, I don’t believe you), feel free.
Otherwise, commend me for this awesome post.

After wrestling with this all day, everything magically started to work right now. Seems to be loading it automatically. Unfortunantly, I have no idea what I did. The last thing I did before it started working right, is I went into the options menu in dota and unbound every single key. Seemed redundant to do that, since I have the “unbindall” command in my autoexec. cfg file. But I did it anyway, and after a few restarts later, everything just works now for no reason. Also, I edited my launch options and removed everything EXCEPT +exec autoexec. cfg. That’s the only two things I changed.
I imagine there will be others who have this problem and you’ll see this post some day and wish I could have posted exactly what I did to fix it. Only thing I can suggest is keep beating at it and keep restarting steam, and restarting dota, and beat at it some more. Eventually, hopefully, you’ll get it to work. But I can 100% confirm that it’s loading my autoexec. cfg file now in a fresh new game, without me having to type anything into the console myself.
Edit: only thing that scares me about this situation is that with all my keys unbound, if the game ever acts up again and doesn’t load my autoexec. cfg, then I’ll be unable to do anything or use any of my abilities lol.

1. If you have keys bound in options it causes problems if you attempt to bind keys via console. You should not do it. Always unbind the keys. (autoexec may be executed but afterwards your hotkey settings is executed which effectively makes some of your keybinds in autoexec useless.)
2. Autoexec is only loaded when the Dota 2 client is started. Not when you play a dota match.
